trying to stand on surf board

HOW TO STAND UP ON YOUR SURFBOARD

Even before you set foot on the beach you can practice your pop up technique, you don’t need to be in the ocean. It’s actually easier on dry land to practice this technique before trying it out on the waves, where your board is less stable and the water is moving.

Repeat this technique, popping up onto your feet then turning sideways with your leading foot in front. Continue to practice this technique until you build up your stamina and can pop up at least twenty times without stopping to catch your breath.

*Bonus Tip – Try not to push up onto your knees if you can help it.

Practice this technique on dry land and you’ll find it much easier once you’re out in the ocean tackling a wave!

Step 1 – Starting Position

Lay down in a press-up position with your hands in line with your chest about the width of a surfboard.

Step 2 – The Press Up

Push up so that your arms are straight and your head is up looking forwards.

Step 3 – The Pop Up

In the same movement, shortly after pushing up and extending your arms. Bring your knees up to your chest and “pop up” onto your feet.

Step 4 – Surfers Stance

Turn sideways  with your leading foot in front, in a surfers stance. Ride the imaginary wave!
