When most people plan a trip to northeastern Brazil, they head straight for Porto de Galinhas or Fernando de Noronha and treat Recife as a stopover. That’s a mistake.
My girlfriend has spent months on end in Recife for years – she has family in Recife – and I joined her for a significant chunk of that. Between us, we know this city better than most travel guides ever will. This is the honest version of where to stay in Recife, written by people who’ve actually lived it.
I’ve divided this guide into the main areas where you can find hotels and apartments: Boa Viagem, Pina, Recife Antigo, Graças / Espinheiro and Olinda. This will help you pick the area that appeals to you most and best matches your interests and budget.
Recife is the capital of the state of Pernambucom, a big, sprawling, genuinely Brazilian city of around 1.5 million people on the northeastern coast. It’s not polished for tourists and that’s part of what makes it special. The history runs deep, the food is outstanding, the music scene during carnival is unlike anything else in the world, and the coast on its doorstep is some of the best in Brazil.

Top 3 hotels to stay in Recife:
Radisson Hotel Recife: Luxury beachfront hotel with direct access to Boa Viagem beach
Bugan Recife Boa Viagem Hotel: Excellent reviews, rooftop terrace, breakfast included
Park Hotel Recife: Solid budget option, 5 mins from Boa Viagem Square
Top 3 things to do in Recife:
Marco Zero / Recife Antigo: The historic heart of Recife and centre of carnival activity
Olinda Historic Centre: UNESCO World Heritage colonial town just 15 minutes from Recife
Porto de Galinhas Day Trip: Natural pools and turquoise water, 60km south of Recife
Perfect for first-time visitors and beach lovers
Boa Viagem is where almost everyone stays in Recife – and for good reason. It’s considerably more upscale and comfortable than the city’s general reputation suggests. Wide beachfront avenue, high-rise apartments with sea views, good gyms, a large Carrefour supermarket, and a strong local food scene. During the day it feels safe, walkable and easy. Most accommodation has security on the door, and there are cameras on most street corners throughout the area.

For a short stay of a few days, a hotel along the beachfront avenue is the straightforward choice – you get immediate beach access and everything on your doorstep. For a longer stay of a week or more, a self-catering Airbnb with a rooftop pool is worth the extra research. Look for a place with a balcony and a hammock. We stayed towards the back of Boa Viagem overlooking the mangroves – quieter, more local in feel, and the rooftop view was genuinely spectacular. In the mornings you’d often spot birds of prey riding the thermals over the rooftops.

Boa Viagem Beach is beautiful – a long arc of golden sand backed by palms and the avenue. But here’s what you need to know before you arrive: you can’t surf here, and swimming requires some timing. The reef running along the coast creates natural tidal pools that are safe for swimming at low tide – that’s where you get in the water. Beyond the reef, the open ocean has a genuine shark risk that local authorities take seriously. Check the tide times before you head down.
What the beach is brilliant for is everything else. Spend a full day under an umbrella – vendors come to you with food and drinks, there are açaí stalls along the beachfront, cold beers, fresh coconuts. You show up at 10am and suddenly it’s 5pm and you’ve barely moved. That is the correct way to do Boa Viagem beach.
Pay-by-weight restaurants
One of the genuine joys of everyday life in Recife. Fill your plate at a buffet of hot food, salads and grilled meat, pay by how much it weighs. Incredible value for lunch, always fresh, and a completely normal part of how local Brazilians eat. You’ll find several dotted around Boa Viagem. Don’t leave without doing this at least a few times.
RioMar and Shopping Recife
Two large shopping centres that double as a great escape from the midday heat. RioMar is the smarter, more upscale of the two – good for browsing, a cinema, and proper air conditioning. Shopping Recife is the larger, more everyday option. Both are easily reachable by Uber and worth knowing about when the sun gets too much.
Parque Dona Lindu
Designed by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, this cultural park hosts exhibitions and events. Worth a stroll in the evening when the heat has dropped.
BeerDock – For craft beer lovers

If you’re like me and you shudder at the thought of drinking Heineken in Brazil (it’s heavily marketed here as a premium lager believe it or not!) and want something a bit more tasty than the standard Brahma, then head to BeerDock. A popular venue for live music and craft beer, BeerDock has a decent menu of craft beers including some strong stouts and IPAs. Like a lot of craft beer bars, prices are higher but it’s worth it if you’re looking for a change from the standard lager on offer.
Check the BeerDock website for latest details of live music
A night at the football

If you’re in Recife when Sport Recife are playing, go. The atmosphere is electric – Torcida Jovem do Leão, the main supporter group, creates one of the best fan displays you’ll see anywhere in South America. Red and yellow banners filling entire stands, drums, noise from first whistle to last. Tickets are cheap by European standards and easy to pick up. Bigger games are held at Arena Pernambuco, the World Cup stadium about 20 minutes from Boa Viagem by Uber, a modern, well-run ground that’s worth seeing in its own right.

Perfect for those who want beach access and easy reach of the city centre
Distance to Boa Viagem beach: 0.5 miles
Pina sits at the northern end of the Boa Viagem beachfront, closer to the city centre and to Recife Antigo. It’s a smart choice if you want beach access but also want to be better positioned for exploring the wider city without a long Uber ride. Accommodation here tends to be slightly more affordable than directly on the main Boa Viagem strip.
Pina Beach
Pina Beach merges with Boa Viagem Beach and has the same reef pool setup for swimming. Slightly less busy than the main Boa Viagem stretch – a good option if you want a bit more space on the sand.
Marco Zero and Recife Antigo
Staying in Pina puts you closer to Marco Zero – the city’s founding square – and the atmospheric Recife Antigo neighbourhood with its colourful colonial buildings, bars and waterfront. Best visited during the day or early evening.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nobile Suítes Executive Beachfront – A 35-storey beachfront hotel with stunning sea views, pool and gym. Excellent English-speaking staff and a strong breakfast buffet – one of the best reviewed hotels in this part of Recife. Check rates & availability ->
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Transamerica Prestige Beach Class – Well-located beachfront option with comfortable rooms and easy access to both the beach and the city. Good value for the position. Check rates & availability ->
⭐⭐⭐ ibis Recife Boa Viagem – Not right on the beach but close, reliable and very affordable. Clean, consistent and well-connected by Uber to everywhere you need to be. Check rates & availability ->
Perfect for culture lovers and short city-focused stays
Recife Antigo is the historic heart of the city – colourful colonial buildings, waterfront bars, the famous Marco Zero square and a genuinely atmospheric old town. Beautiful to visit during the day and early evening. Accommodation options are more limited here than in Boa Viagem, and it’s not the best base if the beach is your priority – but if you’re here for the culture and the carnival, it puts you right in the middle of everything.
Marco Zero
The founding point of Recife – a large square on the waterfront with sweeping views over the harbour. Atmospheric at any time of day, especially in the early evening when locals gather. This is the centre of carnival activity too.
Paço do Frevo
A cultural centre dedicated to frevo – the fast-paced, acrobatic music and dance style unique to Pernambuco and recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Worth visiting even if you’ve never heard of frevo before. You will leave a fan.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Novotel Recife Marina – Excellent marina location in the heart of the old town with waterfront views and modern rooms. The best option if you want to be in the historic centre rather than on the beach. Check rates & availability ->
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Marante Plaza Hotel – Good mid-range option well located for exploring the city on foot. Comfortable rooms, good service and easy Uber access to Boa Viagem beach when you want it. Check rates & availability ->
⭐⭐⭐ Pousada Lorde Inglês – Simple, affordable pousada well reviewed by guests in the Boa Vista area. A good base for those who want to explore the city centre and Recife Antigo without paying beachfront prices. Check rates & availability ->
Perfect for those wanting a more residential, local feel
Graças and neighbouring Espinheiro are upscale residential neighbourhoods away from the beach – tree-lined streets, good restaurants and a more local atmosphere. Not the obvious choice for a beach holiday but worth knowing about if you’re spending serious time in the city or want a quieter base away from the tourist areas. Generally considered very safe and with a genuinely pleasant neighbourhood feel.
Instituto Ricardo Brennand
One of Recife’s genuine highlights and often overlooked by visitors who stick to Boa Viagem. A private museum set in a castle housing one of the largest collections of arms and armour in the Americas alongside a serious art collection. The grounds alone are worth the trip.
Oficina Brennand
A vast open-air sculpture park created by ceramicist Francisco Brennand – surreal, striking and unlike anything else in Brazil. Budget at least two hours and go in the morning before the heat peaks.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mar Hotel Conventions – Well-regarded hotel popular with both business and leisure travellers. Good pool, solid restaurant and easy Uber access to the beach and the city’s main attractions. Check rates & availability ->
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mercure Recife Navegantes – Reliable Mercure standard in a good location, within 5 minutes walk of Avenida Boa Viagem. Modern rooms and consistent quality at a fair price. Check rates & availability ->
⭐⭐⭐ Cosmopolitan Hostel – Well-reviewed budget option close to Boa Viagem with a good social atmosphere. Both dorms and private rooms available. A solid choice for solo travellers on a tighter budget. Check rates & availability ->

Perfect for carnival and those wanting a quieter, more historic atmosphere
Distance to Recife centre: 15 minutes by Uber
Olinda is a UNESCO World Heritage colonial town just 15 minutes north of Recife – cobblestone streets, brightly painted houses, hilltop churches and sweeping views over the coast. It has a completely different atmosphere to Recife and is charming in its own right. Accommodation is mostly smaller guesthouses and pousadas rather than large hotels.
Olinda is particularly worth considering as a base if you’re coming for carnival – the street parties here run throughout the season and the historic centre comes alive in a way that’s genuinely special. If carnival isn’t your thing, Olinda works best as a day trip from Boa Viagem rather than a full base.

The historic centre
Wander the cobblestone streets, climb to the Alto da Sé for views over the rooftops and coast, and explore the baroque churches and colourful facades. One of the most photogenic places in northeastern Brazil and far less visited than it deserves to be.
Sunday evening mini carnival
Every Sunday evening throughout the year, the streets of Olinda’s historic centre come alive with local music, colourful costumes and food stalls. A taste of carnival spirit any time of year – and completely free.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pousada do Amparo – A beautifully restored colonial pousada in the heart of Olinda’s historic centre, part of the prestigious Roteiros de Charme collection. Special, intimate and worth every penny if you want the full Olinda experience. Check rates & availability ->
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pousada dos Quatro Cantos – One of Olinda’s most recommended pousadas. Charming colonial building, friendly staff and a great location for exploring the historic centre on foot. Books up fast during carnival. Check rates & availability ->
⭐⭐⭐ Browse budget options in Olinda – Olinda has a good range of smaller guesthouses at budget prices. Worth checking availability early – especially if you’re coming for carnival when everything fills up fast. See all options ->

If you can time your trip for carnival, do it. Full stop.
I went in not quite knowing what to expect and came out having had one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Recife carnival isn’t the glossy, ticketed spectacle of Rio – it’s rawer, more local, more genuinely Brazilian. Different stages are set up across the city with major Brazilian acts performing throughout – axé, forró, frevo, maracatu, the full spectrum of northeastern Brazilian music. Food and drink stalls are everywhere. The atmosphere is completely euphoric.
What surprised me most was how well organised and safe it was. I’d expected chaos and found something much more managed – proper crowd management, a real police presence, good infrastructure throughout. Families, couples, groups of friends all mixed together having the time of their lives.

That said – pace yourself. I did three solid days of carnival and by the end I was completely worn out, and came down with a nasty sore throat and virus that knocked me out for days afterwards. Three days of sun, dancing, dubious food stall choices and very little sleep will do that. Go in knowing it’s a marathon. Hydrate. Sleep when you can.
Book accommodation well in advance if you’re coming for carnival – prices rise sharply and availability disappears fast. Check what’s available for your dates ->
One of Recife’s best qualities is its position as a launching pad for the wider Pernambuco coast.
Porto de Galinhas – about 60km south, one of Brazil’s most celebrated beach destinations. Famous for its natural pools and vivid turquoise water. More resort-oriented and developed than the surrounding area, but the natural pools are genuinely spectacular.
Maracaípe – right next door to Porto de Galinhas but a completely different world. Quieter, more chilled, centred around a river mouth surf break. Much less commercial. If your idea of a Brazil trip is surfing and unwinding rather than poolside cocktails, Maracaípe is where you want to be.
Pipa – further south into Rio Grande do Norte, about three hours. More of a backpacker-meets-boutique feel, dramatically beautiful clifftops, good surf. Worth it if you have time.
For all of these, Uber doesn’t reliably operate outside the city – rent a car or arrange a private transfer.
Boa Viagem is genuinely safe during the day. The cameras, the security at most buildings, the busy streets – it all adds up to a neighbourhood where you can walk around comfortably without feeling on edge.
At night, use common sense. Get an Uber rather than walking somewhere unfamiliar. Don’t flash your phone or valuables around on the street, particularly after dark. Stick to the busier, well-lit areas.
The reality is that if you’re staying in Boa Viagem, eating in the local restaurants, going to the beach and using Uber to get around, you’ll have no problems. The areas that give Recife its reputation are not the areas you’ll be spending time in.
Use Uber for everything beyond walking distance. It works brilliantly in Recife, it’s very cheap by European standards, and it removes any stress about navigation or safety. During the day Boa Viagem is very walkable. At night, Uber every time. Note that Uber doesn’t reliably operate outside the city – for day trips to Porto de Galinhas, Maracaípe or Pipa, rent a car or arrange a private transfer.
That’s all from us on where to stay in Recife. We hope this guide helps you find the right spot for your trip. Going further along the coast?
