Where to Stay in Lisbon: Masa Campo Grande Spa Hotel Review

Apr 04

Our review of Masa Campo Grande, an affordable spa hotel for leisure and business travellers near Lisbon airport.

Looking for where to stay in Lisbon without breaking the bank? Let me introduce you to the Masa Campo Grande!

We recently spent a night there during a long flight connection to Brazil, and we highly recommend it for an overnight stay or a weekend away in the Portuguese capital.

Located in the cool neighbourhood of Alvalade, Masa Campo Grande is an affordable 4* spa hotel that’s conveniently close to the airport, well-connected to public transport and just a short walk from trendy bars and restaurants.

Hotel Features

After reading some reviews of previous guests complaining about the noise from the planes, we were in two minds about booking this hotel.

But since we were there for just one night, we bit the bullet and booked a Superior Room.

We were lucky enough to get a room with a privileged view of Mário Soares’ Gardens and, despite the fact that it faced the main road, it wasn’t noisy at all.

The bed was comfortable and the black-out curtains – literally velcroed to the walls – blocked any sun beams from coming in, which helped us have a much-needed rest before a long-haul flight the next day.

Our room was spacious, elegantly furnished in light, calming colours and equipped with all the necessary amenities, including a massive TV screen with a wide selection of channels and coffee and tea facilities.

The only thing we didn’t like was the €1 extra charge for using coffee pods.

I’m not a coffee drinker or a fan of plastic waste but, if you’re a 4-star hotel that want to make coffee machines available to your guests, charging extra for the capsules just makes it look a bit cheap.

Fast free WiFi

We’re both remote workers – I’m a freelancer language teacher and a translator and Paul runs Traverse Events – so sometimes we have to work while on the road.

That’s the reason we always try to stay at places with good Internet access to avoid the stress of being unable to work due to the lack of connectivity.

If you’re not doing a video call, the free Wi-Fi in the rooms at Masa will do just fine.

But if that’s not the case, you’d better ask reception for the password to a stronger network connection or tether from your phone, like I did.

Restaurant and Bars

Whether you’re in the mood for a fancy sit-down meal or a casual coffee break, Masa Hotel Campo Grande has you covered with Ynot, its on-site restaurant, and a café.

Featuring soft lighting, marble finishes and a relaxed ambiance, Ynot offers a welcoming atmosphere for guests who want to enjoy a generous buffet breakfast or a sophisticated à la carte dinner.

The continental breakfast selection includes a mix of patries, hot buffet food and Portuguese delicacies such as the beloved Pastel de Nata.

Just bear in mind that the restaurant, as well as the whole hotel, is alcohol and pork-free.

The Staff

We can’t fault the staff at Masa Hotel.

From the moment we got off our Bolt, we were greeted by Masa’s friendly bellhops, who promptly came down the steps at the entrance to welcome us and help us with our luggage.

Whenever we interacted with any of the staff, be it at breakfast or during the check-out, they were always pleasant, welcoming and helpful.

The Spa

Open from 9 am to 10 pm, the compact One Wellness & Spa is available to those who want to unwind or keep up with the exercise routine during their stay.

For an extra tenner a day, guests can use their gym and facilities, which include a heated pool and a jacuzzi surrounded by a few loungers.

There’s also a selection of spa treatments available for booking, if you want to take your relaxation up a notch.

Speak to a member of the spa to get booked in, so you can have some chill out time after a full day of sightseeing around the streets of Lisbon.

What we loved about Masa Campo Grande

  • Generous buffet breakfast included in the rate
  • Convenient location near the airport
  • Well-connected to public transport
  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Full black-out curtains
  • Spa on-site

Prices

We decided to book this hotel after checking the reviews on the biggest accommodation websites such as Booking.com, Hotels.com and Expedia.com.

On top of the excellent ratings, Masa Campo Grande Hotel is more reasonably priced than other similar, more centrally-located 4-star hotels in Lisbon with the same facilities and services.

So if you want to stay in a spa hotel that fits your budget, Masa Campo Grande Lisbon is a great accommodation choice.

Overview

Overall, we thought Masa Campo Grande Hotel is good value for money. It’s conveniently located, fairly priced and amazingly comfortable, which is what you really need in a hotel.
